Responsibilities
The Treasurer’s Office is responsible for the collection of all taxes for the County, including real estate and special assessments as well as mobile homes. The office also titles and licenses new and used:
- Boats
- Motor Vehicles
- Motorcycles
- Snowmobiles
- Trailers
Lien notations and releases, and duplicate motor vehicle titles are also handled through the Treasurer’s Office.
Funds
All County funds are received and accounted for by the Treasurer. The Treasurer is also responsible for managing the County’s investments, submits monthly remittances to the State, and issues distress warrants on behalf of the Department of Revenue and Department of Labor as required by law.
Motor Vehicles
The Treasurer’s office titles and licenses all new and used motor vehicles, motorcycles, trailers, snowmobiles, and boats. Our office also records and releases liens placed on vehicles.
Registration
Registration on commercial, non-commercial vehicles and trailers, motorcycles, snowmobiles, and boats are done on a staggered licensing system based on the first letter of the owner’s last name, or in the case of a business, on the beginning letter of the business name. Renewal months are as follows:
- A, B - January
- C, D, E - February
- F, G, J - March
- H, I, O - May
- K, L - June
- M, N - July
- P, Q, R- August
- S - September
- T through Z - November
Registration Renewal Methods
In Person
In person, you will need to bring into the Treasurer's office one of the following:
- Vehicle registration renewal card along with a photo ID. You will receive this card in the mail approximately 60 to 90 days prior to your vehicles’ expiration date. Vehicle registration renewal cards are sent out as a courtesy from the Division of Motor Vehicles in Pierre.
- Your title or copy of your title along with a photo ID.
- Your current registration, along with a photo ID, if you are leasing the vehicle and do not have a copy of your title.
By Mail
By mail, to the Treasurer's office:
- Verify vehicles on the registration renewal postcard. Line through any you do not own or do not want to renew.
- Include in your payment the appropriate postage fee as shown on the card.
- Include your South Dakota Driver License or ID number.
- Allow 5 to 10 days for processing.
Online
- Log into My 605 Drive
- You can renew 90 days before the expiration and up to 12 months after the expiration date.
- Acceptable forms of payments are electronic check, credit/debit cards (MasterCard, VISA, or Discover only).
Self-Service Terminal (SST)
- Regardless of county of residence you can renew 90 days before the expiration and up to 9 months after.
- Acceptable forms of payments are electronic check, credit/debit cards (MasterCard, VISA, or Discover only).

Real Estate Taxes:
Online Payments
Hughes County has entered an agreement with Catalis for online property tax payments. This site is designed to provide you with additional methods to research your property information and to allow you to pay your property taxes online.
For an additional convenience fee (listed below) you may pay by ACH or credit card. If you own multiple properties, you may pay for them all in one transaction.
Payment Methods & Convenience Fees-
Credit Card - Discover / MasterCard / Visa / American Express (AMEX) 2.5% per Total Payment with a Minimum $1.50
Digital Payment System - PayPal & PayPal Credit with 6-month 0% Financing if approved 2.5% per Total Payment with a Minimum $1.50
ACH - E-Check- $2.00 per Total Payment
Convenience Fees will be combined with the Total Due.
If a refund is issued, we might not be able to reimburse any Convenience Fees.
Payments can take 3 - 5 Business days to process
If taxes are delinquent, you will be unable to pay online. Please contact the Treasurer’s Office for more information.
If you are experiencing issues with finding your property with the parcel number, try entering a 0 before the parcel number to find the correct property.
Example: Parcel 04791 instead of Parcel 4791
If you are using a street address and having problems try removing the directional indicator.
Example: 104 Main instead of 104 N Main St
Payments by Mail
All mail payments must be postmarked by April 30th for the first half and October 31st for the second half to avoid interest. Mail payments can take up to 5 - 7 Business days to process.
