Civil Process
Civil paperwork can be mailed or delivered to the Hughes County Sheriff’s Office, 3200 E Hwy 34 Ste 9 Pierre SD 57501 or e-mailed to HCSO@co.hughes.sd.us. Please note that there is a fee of $1.00 per page that we are required to print when documents are e-mailed. For any service, please send a cover letter that states clearly who is requested to be served, their address and the documents being served. We will invoice after services are complete.
Our civil fees are as follows:
Subpoena: $20 + MILEAGE
EVERYTHING ELSE: $50 + MILEAGE
Our base fee for mileage is $5.90 and anything over 10 miles will begin accruing an additional mileage fee of $ 0.50 per mile.

Concealed Weapons Permit Information
A temporary permit to carry a concealed pistol shall be issued within five business days of application to a person if the applicant:
1. Has physically resided in and is a resident of Hughes County for at least thirty days immediately preceding the date of the application, driver’s license must show Hughes County address.
2. Must be eighteen years of age or older.
3. Has never pled guilty, no contendre to, or been convicted of a felony or crime of violence.
4. Is not habitually in an intoxicated or drugged condition.
5. Has no history of violence.
6. Has not been found in the previous ten years to be a “danger to self” as defined in SDCL 27A-1-1 or is not currently adjudged mentally incompetent.
7. Has no violations of Chapter 23-7 (firearms control), 22-14 (unlawful use of weapons) or 22-42 (controlled substances and marijuana) constituting a felony or misdemeanor in the five years preceding the date of application or is not currently under indictment of such offense.
False Information: No person applying for a permit to carry a concealed pistol may give false information or offer false evidence of his/her identity. A violation of this section is a Class 6 felony (SDCL 23-7-12, punishable by two years / $2000 fine). This includes false information as to place of residency.
If you meet the above criteria you may apply for a concealed weapon permit. You will be called back to the office within five business days of your application date to sign your documents and obtain your temporary permit, after a background is completed and there is no reason for denial found. Your laminated permit will then be mailed to you from the Secretary of State’s office and that permit will then be good for five years from the date of issue. If you do not receive your laminated card from the Secretary of State’s office within 60 days, please contact them at (605) 773-3537.

Enhanced Concealed Carry Permit
For the Enhanced Concealed Carry Permit there is an enhanced concealed carry course that is required to obtain the permit. You may select from the South Dakota Enhanced Permit Instructor Roster and contact an instructor from the following list to attend a class. There is a list of Enhanced Instructors attached under the Sheriff’s Office forms section.
There is no fee required for obtaining a concealed carry permit or for fingerprinting if it is required for the permit that you request.
