The Hughes County Sheriff’s Office provides civil process services including the service of subpoenas, summons, complaints, and other court documents.
📬 How to Submit Civil Papers
You may submit civil documents to our office by:

Please note: A printing fee of $1.00 per page will apply to documents submitted by fax or email.

When submitting civil paperwork, please include a cover letter that clearly states:

The name of the individual to be served

The full address where service should be attempted
-
A list or description of the documents to be served
Invoices for services will be issued after service is completed.

Service Type Fee
Subpoena $20 + mileage
All Other Documents $50 + mileage
Mileage Charges:

Base mileage fee: $10.00 per attempt
-
Additional mileage: $0.75 per mile for distances exceeding 10 miles

A civil service fee still applies if service is attempted but not completed:

Unsuccessful Subpoena: $20

All Other Documents: $50

Concealed Pistol Permit Information
A temporary permit to carry a concealed pistol may be issued within five (5) business days of application, provided all eligibility requirements are met and no disqualifying information is found during the background check.
âś… Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for a concealed pistol permit in Hughes County, applicants must:

Be a resident of Hughes County
-
Must have physically resided in Hughes County for at least 30 days prior to applying
-
Driver’s license must show a Hughes County address
-
-
Be 18 years of age or older
-
Have no felony convictions or crimes of violence
-
This includes pleas of guilty, nolo contendere, or convictions
-
-
Not be habitually intoxicated or under the influence of drugs
-
Have no history of violent behavior
-
Have no recent mental health disqualifications
-
Must not have been found to be a “danger to self” under SDCL 27A-1-1 in the past 10 years
-
Must not be currently adjudged mentally incompetent
-
-
Have no disqualifying offenses within the past 5 years under:

SDCL Chapter 23-7 – Firearms Control
-
SDCL Chapter 22-14 – Unlawful Use of Weapons
-
SDCL Chapter 22-42 – Controlled Substances and Marijuana
-
Simple Assault or Domestic Assault (misdemeanor or felony)
-
Must not be currently under indictment for any such offense
-
⚖️ State and Federal Law Compliance
All permit applications are evaluated in accordance with South Dakota state statutes as well as applicable federal laws and regulations governing firearms and concealed carry eligibility.
đźš« False Information Warning
Providing false information or submitting false evidence of identity in your permit application is a Class 6 felony (SDCL 23-7-12).
Penalties include:

Up to 2 years imprisonment

Up to $2,000 in fines
This includes falsifying your place of residency or identity.

Your application will be reviewed and a background check conducted

Temporary Permit Issuance

If approved, you will be contacted within 5 business days (unless fingerprinting is required) to return and:

Sign your paperwork

Receive your temporary permit

Laminated Permit
-
Your official laminated permit will be mailed to you by the South Dakota Secretary of State’s Office
-
Valid for 5 years from the date of issuance
-
