Weed and/or Tree Removal
Tree and or Weed Removal on Township Roads
South Dakota Codified Law 31-31-2 --Weed removal on township roads--duty of abutting landowner. The owner or occupant of any land abutting or adjoining upon township roads shall cut, remove, or destroy or cause to be cut, removed, or destroyed, grass, weeds, trees, and brush growing on or in the right-of-way of such roads, provided that such roads are left in such condition that any and all undergrowth thereby or thereon can be cut with a mower. A violation of this section is a petty offense.
Weed Removal on State or County Roads
South Dakota Codified Law 31-31-1 -- Weed removal on state or county roads. The Department of Transportation and board of county commissioners of the various counties shall cut or remove, or cause to be cut or removed, grass, weeds, and brush growing within the right-of-way of all public highways within their respective jurisdiction and over which such department and boards exercise control as to repair and maintenance. A violation of this section is a petty offense.

Road work: 293rd Avenue, Hughes County
PIERRE, SD –
The Hughes County Highway Department will be applying soybean oil for dust control to the gravel road surface of 293rd Avenue from Highway 14 south to 206th Street and a quarter of a mile east on 206th Street in Hughes County on Wednesday, June 18 and Thursday, June 19, 2025. During this time, access will remain open, but expect delays during the application process.

Road work: Chip sealing

The Hughes County Highway Department will begin chip sealing in the following locations within Hughes County on Tuesday, August 12, 2025:
- Portions of Kingsway Road
- Portions of East Spring Creek Drive (Maize Street)
- Portions of Windsor Place
- Range Road

NOTICE OF HEARING
Notice is hereby given that the Hughes County Commission will hold a Public Hearing at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 16, 2025, in the Commission Room on the second floor of the Hughes County Courthouse at 104 East Capitol Avenue to consider the following matter:
The 2026-2030 Hughes County Highway and Bridge Improvement Transportation Plan is prepared in compliance with the SD Bridge Improvement Grant Program requirements. The purpose of the public hearing is to inform the public of the plan’s intent and to receive input from the public on county transportation in Hughes County.
The Hearing is open to all interested parties. Copies of the 2026-2031 Hughes County Highway and Bridge Improvement Transportation Plan are available in the Commission Office in the Courthouse at 104 E Capitol Avenue, Pierre, SD 57501 or at the County Highway Shop.
If special accommodation is necessary, please notify the County Auditor at least twenty-four (24) hours prior to the day of the meeting. Written comments can be sent to: Hughes County Commission, 104 East Capitol Avenue, Pierre, SD 57501 or submitted at the meeting.
