Hughes County is looking for a Full-Time Detention Deputy to join our team at the Hughes County Jail in Pierre, SD. This position includes 12 Hour shifts; 2 on, 2 off,3 on 3 off. Work 7 days in a 14-day work period. Every other weekend is a 3-day weekend.
Here is What You Will Do:
- Performing security rounds during scheduled and unscheduled times.
- Creating and maintaining a cell block atmosphere conducive to respect of others.
- Enforcing disciplinary sanctions.
- Maintaining appropriate boundaries with inmates.
- Initiating and monitoring inmate movement; recognize abnormal or inappropriate behavior.
- Restraining unruly inmates using force and restraining devices using maneuvers as trained.
- Documenting incidents, movement, rounds and inmate discipline.
- Performing person, property, and facility searches.
- Operate department computer program; dictate and/or type reports
- Communicate effectively and coherently with the public, staff, inmates and in court or other formal settings with approved facility communication devices.
- Attend and participate in shift briefings.
- Complying with all policies and procedures of the Hughes County Jail.
- Maintains the integrity, professionalism, values, and goals of the Sheriff's Office by assuring all policies and procedures of the Hughes County Jail are followed, and that accountability and public trust are preserved.
- Required to handle multiple tasks at a time.
- Other duties as assigned.

- HS Diploma or GED.
- Education or experience in law enforcement or criminal justice preferred.
- Background check and pre-employment physical/drug screen before hire.
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Criminal History: No felony conviction; no misdemeanor convictions in the last 3 years.

This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.
This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.

Election Precinct Workers:
- Hughes County currently has 5 vote centers.
- Hughes County pays election workers $18.00 per hour for attending instruction and working election day.
- A precinct superintendent or precinct deputy must be a registered voter and a resident of the precinct.
- There can be three, five, seven, or nine workers in the vote centers.
- The members of the precinct election board shall be selected from each party and the party receiving a majority of the votes cast for Governor in the election precinct at the last preceding gubernatorial election shall have a majority of the members of the precinct election board.
- The precinct superintendent shall belong to the party whose candidate received the most votes for Governor in the last gubernatorial election in that precinct.
- There is a Primary Election in June and a General Election in November of every even numbered year. There is a Pierre City and Pierre School election every year.
- The members of the election board will receive training prior to each election.
- The polling places are open from 7 AM to 7 PM.
- The election board members set up the polling place prior to opening and reconciles and delivers the ballots and supplies to the courthouse after the polls close.
