It is our mission that the Hughes County Jail serves the citizens and visitors of Hughes County. Providing professional detention and court security that protects and preserves the constitutional rights of the people and mandates the fair and impartial enforcement of the law.
Visitation
REMOTE From 8am - 10pm daily…We offer remote video visitations from home using your computer, mobile phone, or tablet device. Mail
To mail a letter to an inmate send it to the Hughes County Jail and the post office will deliver it. Any person mailing contraband to an inmate will be prosecuted. All mail, newspapers or approved magazines must be delivered by the US Post Office. Packages from Amazon and approved vendors are accepted. We do not accept mail delivered by hand. Due to the danger posed to inmates and staff with illegal drugstrafficked through inmate mail, all postage stamps must be purchased on commissary. Incoming mail containing stamps will be returned to sender.To mail letters to inmates please address the envelope as follows:

The Hughes County Jail is committed to ensuring that all inmates and visitors are protected under Federal, State and City Ordinances. Under SDCL 25-10-13, Violation of Protection Orders or No Contact Orders may be considered a misdemeanor or felony. Any contact with the protected person(s) is a violation; whether it’s direct contact or through a third party. The Hughes County Jail will notify Law Enforcement of any violations of SDCL 25-10-13 that occur by way of mail, email, phone, and visitation or through third party contact.

Posting Bail
Bond payments will be accepted at the Hughes County Jail from any person 18 years of age or older with an ID.

Inmate Currency
Sending Money via U.S. Postal Service…U.S. Postal Money Orders or Cashier's Checks of $500 or less can be mailed to the inmate. Once received, the money is deposited into their account.
Online or Onsite Deposits…Jail ATM is a service provided to friends and family of inmates incarcerated in the Hughes County Jail. It is a fast and convenient way to send money to inmates. Funds are credited to the inmates account almost immediately after the transaction is approved by the credit card company. There are two ways to deposit funds in an inmates account, online or using the kiosk in the Jail lobby.
Online or Onsite Deposits…Jail ATM is a service provided to friends and family of inmates incarcerated in the Hughes County Jail. It is a fast and convenient way to send money to inmates. Funds are credited to the inmates account almost immediately after the transaction is approved by the credit card company. There are two ways to deposit funds in an inmates account, online or using the kiosk in the Jail lobby.
Online Deposit…Go to www.jailatm.com to deposit money in an inmate's account through the internet. You can use credit or debit cards issued by Visa, MasterCard or Discover. You will need to select Hughes County Jail from the facility menu. You can then search for an inmate by entering their name.
Onsite (Jail Lobby) Deposit…You can make deposits using cash or credit/debit cards issued by Visa, MasterCard or Discover via the kiosk in the public lobby of the Jail. You can find an inmate by entering their last name or inmate ID number. Transactions are final and cannot be refunded. Please ensure you select the correct inmate.
Fees -There is a $3.00 fee to deposit funds to an inmate's account using the lobby kiosk.
Inmate Commissary
Commissary orders are processed 2x per week.
Orders placed by Sunday evening at 10pm MST will be delivered Tuesday night.
Orders placed by Wednesday evening at 10pm MST will be delivered Friday night.
Holidays may impact commissary delivery. Inmates can order commissary providing there is money in their account. Family and friends can order commissary at www.jailatm.com.
Medical Services
Hughes County Jail employs a full-time medical staff:
- A Registered Nurse is on-call 24 hours a day 7 days a week for medical attention.
- A Physician's Contract provides clinics a minimum of once a week for inmates.
- Mental Health provides for a counselor to be at the facility 24 hours per week, with the provision of 24 hour on-call service as needed to address confinement and coping skills.
PREA - Prison Rape Elimination Act
What is PREA?
Congress enacted the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) in 2003 to establish a zero tolerance of sexual abuse in any federal, state or local confinement facility. National standards regarding detection, prevention and response to sexual abuse, as well as gathering data were finalized and went into effect in August 2013.
The Hughes County Jail is committed to ensuring a safe and humane environment for all inmates and has zero tolerance for all forms of sexual abuse, sexual harassment and/or sexual misconduct within its facility.
Sexual contact between inmates and/or staff is not permitted at the Hughes County Jail. According to South Dakota Codified Law 22-22-7.6: sexual acts between any person employed at a jail and detainees is a felony which is punishable by two years in a state penitentiary and a $2,000.00 fine. Inmates engaging in consensual sexual contact are in violation of facility rules and will face disciplinary action.
Inmates receive education about their rights under PREA upon intake and throughout their stay VIA an orientation video that plays daily and an inmate handbook that is issued to each inmate.
How to Report a PREA Related Incident
The facility provides multiple ways for reporting allegations of sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and/or sexual misconduct and all allegations are thoroughly investigated. If deemed criminal, law enforcement is immediately notified. There are no time constraints on making a report.
